This is the story of Louis, who never quite fit in, and of his younger brother, who always tried to tag along. As they got older, they grew apart. And as they got older still, one of them got cancer, and the other became his caretaker. Then they became close again, two brothers on one final journey together, wading through the stuff that’s thicker than water.
Told in anecdotes as his brother remembers them, we discover who this cranky, cancerous Louis once was. That before his brain surgery he had a mind that was said to be bigger than the rest of the family’s put together, and that his heart was—and still is—just as big. That it’s hard getting a haircut with a brain tumor, and that it does no good to help your brother memorize a PIN number when he might not be able to remember where the bank is. We learn along with these two brothers how the little stuff is as big as the big stuff, how tragedy and comedy go together, and how necessary it is that they do.
Inspired by Shearer’s experiences when his own brother was dying and written with a warm touch that is at once tender and achingly funny, This Is the Life is a moving testimony to both the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of the simpler things in life, like not taking a dying man’s tea kettle away.

Size Exchanges for New Apparel
For new, unworn apparel, Belleville will generally accommodate a size exchange when the same item is available in another size.
Items must be unworn, unused, with original tags attached, and accompanied by proof of purchase. Size exchanges are subject to current inventory availability.
If the requested size is no longer available or the item is no longer carried, the purchase remains subject to Belleville’s final-sale policy unless another exception is approved by our team.
Online Order Damages & Issues
When your online order arrives, please inspect it promptly. If an item is defective, damaged, or you receive the wrong item, contact us immediately at hello@bellevillemarket.com or call (484) 212-5605 so we can review the issue and help make it right.
Please include your order number and photos of the item and packaging when applicable.
Rare Circumstance Returns & Exchanges
In limited circumstances, Belleville may approve a return or exchange.
If a return is approved, the item must be returned at your expense within 14 days of the original purchase and must be:
- In the same condition in which it was received
- Unworn or unused
- With original tags
- In its original packaging
- Accompanied by a receipt or proof of purchase
A 33.3% restocking fee may apply to approved returns.

Items returned without prior approval will not be accepted. Return shipping is the responsibility of the customer.
Non-Returnable Items
Certain items cannot be returned even when exceptions are granted, including:
- Perishable goods such as food, flowers, and plants
- Custom, personalized, made-to-order, and special-order products
- Seasonal merchandise, including Christmas and Harvest décor
- Paint
- Vintage and antique merchandise
- Items sold as-is
- Sale and clearance merchandise
- Personal care and beauty products
- Hazardous materials, flammable liquids, or gases
- Gift cards
Sale items and gift cards are always final sale.
Refunds
Once an approved return has been received and inspected, we’ll notify you whether the refund has been approved.
If approved, your refund will be issued to the original payment method within 10 business days. Your bank or credit card provider may require additional time to process and post the refund.
