Thomas Wazhashk is the night watchman at the jewel-bearing plant, the first factory located near the Turtle Mountain Reservation in rural North Dakota. He is also a Chippewa Council member who is trying to understand the new “emancipation” bill on its way to the floor of the United States Congress. It is 1953, and he and the other council members know the bill isn’t about freedom—it’s a “termination” that threatens the rights of Native Americans to their land and their very identity. How can the government abandon treaties made in good faith with Native Americans “for as long as the grasses shall grow, and the rivers run”?

Since graduating from high school, Pixie Paranteau has insisted that everyone call her Patrice. Unlike most of the girls on the reservation, Patrice, the class valedictorian, has no desire to wear herself down with a husband and kids. She makes jewel bearings at the plant, a job that barely pays her enough to support her mother and brother. Patrice’s shameful alcoholic father returns home sporadically to terrorize his wife and children and bully her for money. But Patrice needs every penny to follow her beloved older sister, Vera, who moved to the big city of Minneapolis. Vera may have disappeared; she hasn’t been in touch in months, and is rumored to have had a baby. Determined to find Vera and her child, Patrice makes a fateful trip to Minnesota that introduces her to unexpected forms of exploitation and violence, and endangers her life.

Thomas and Patrice live in this impoverished reservation community along with young Chippewa boxer Wood Mountain and his mother Juggie Blue, her niece and Patrice’s best friend Valentine, and Stack Barnes, the white high school math teacher and boxing coach who is hopelessly in love with Patrice.

Online Order Damages and Issues
When ordering online and receiving your item, please inspect your order upon reception and contact us immediately at hello@bellevillemarket.com or call (484) 212-5605 if the item is defective, damaged or if you receive the wrong item, so that we can evaluate the issue and make it right.

Rare Circumstance Returns & Exchanges
If, in rare cases, a return is approved, the item must be returned to us at your expense within 14 days of the original purchase. 

The item must be:

  • In the same condition that you received it
  • Unworn or unused
  • With original tags
  • In its original packaging
  • Accompanied by a receipt or proof of purchase

A restocking fee of 33.3% may apply to all approved returns.

If your return is accepted, we’ll send you instructions on how and where to send your package. Items sent back to us without first requesting a return will not be accepted. Returns are returned to Belleville Market at your expense.

Non-Returnable Items
Certain types of items cannot be returned even if exceptions are granted: perishable goods (such as food, flowers, or plants), custom and made-to-order products (such as special orders or personalized items), seasonal items (such as Christmas and Harvest decor), paint, vintage and antique items, items sold as-is, sale and clearance items, and personal care goods (such as beauty products). We also do not accept returns for hazardous materials, flammable liquids, or gases. Please get in touch if you have questions or concerns about your specific item.

Unfortunately, we can never accept returns or exchanges on sale items or gift cards.

Refunds
We will notify you once we’ve received and inspected your return, and let you know if the refund was approved or not. If approved, you’ll be automatically refunded on your original payment method within 10 business days. Please remember it can take some time for your bank or credit card company to process and post the refund too.
