At the age of 20, John Doherty saw a store that sold carmelcorn in his hometown of Michigan City. A standalone store, as opposed to a popcorn wagon, was a rarity in those days and Mr. Doherty was intrigued. He landed a job with the Karmelkorn franchise and brought the business to Easton in 1931 at 468 Northampton Street. After two years he moved the business to 62 Centre Square, where it remains to this day. Refusing to move the business to the forthcoming Palmer Park Mall, he ended his contract with the franchise and changed the "K" to a "C," becoming The Carmelcorn Shop in the early 1970s. Mr. Doherty retired in 1985 and sold to local retired banker Richard Baskin. Mr. Baskin ran the business for eleven years before turning the keys over to Sia Bassil in 1996. Mrs. Bassil had begun working at the store in her early teens under Mr. Doherty and continued on at holidays and other busy times with Mr. Baskin.

Although the candy selections have changed over the years, the store remains much the same as when it first opened. The store still serves its famed carmelcorn and popcorn, popped in the gas-powered, stainless steel popper, circa 1940. The original recipes for fudge, peanut brittle, chocolate-covered strawberries, coated chocolates and roasted nuts continue to be made in-house. The business sign, one of the first to be lit in downtown, still graces the front facade along with the original marble bulkhead displaying the store's offerings. Along with a vast knowledge of candy novelties from years gone by, Mrs. Bassil continues the traditions of the business with a labor of love and until she finds the next steward of The Carmelcorn Shop.
